Wall of Offerings
After we started work on the wall in early 2023, we started getting offerings from neighbors and friends to add to it!
The first offering we received was from a crate filled with a hodgepodge of metal, ceramics, and glass. Those “art supplies” have gone into many of Nancy’s projects, the kitchen space door (see Inside the Hodgepodge House), and the wall.
One of the most delightful secret offerings was three pieces of Pyrite that we found, one placed in each of the upturned bottoms of three green bottles Nancy had just put into the wall. They have withstood all kinds of weather and mayhem, and have persisted. We still don’t know who left them, but it makes us smile every time we see their glimmer.
One day Nancy was working on securing the arch she had welded to connect the lights to the far corner of the yard. A car stopped in front of the house, and one of our neighbors got out and came to say hello. She had in her hands a lovely glass and metal figurine, which she offered to add to the wall. Nancy wanted to make a special spot for her, where she would be protected but also have a place of honor. She is now overlooking the official “wall of offerings,” on the north side:
Ron’s parents were visiting friends in Mexico who own a store that sells art. They had a beautiful red blown glass heart ornament that broke, and Ron’s parents brought it all the way back here for us to see if we could put it in the wall. Nancy found the perfect way to incorporate it, and made sure it was backlit by day and by night:
